To Virginia and Back

Oh, how I missed you girls last Friday! I was in Virginia visiting my Mom's family and just did not have the time to think about blogging.  But, I did think about you and missed our visits.

I left last Wednesday (the 7th) headed to Newport News, VA. (my birthplace) All that I have left of my Mom's family is in that area of Virginia. The main person I went to see was my Mom's oldest sister and the only sibling left out of five children.  Can you believe that she (pictured below) will be 88 years old on May 12th?  I can only hope that I have inheirted some of her genetic makeup. She has been a widow for 9 years and is the Mother to 4 sons.  She lives alone, loves to work in her yard, is always doing something for someone, still drives and is as "sharp as a tack."  I love her dearly!

I have several cousins in the area and was able to see 2-3 of them.  I was able to spend the day with one having a good time shopping, visiting and acting silly. I am sure the various shop owners thought we were two crazy
women. ~chuckle~  I carried my camera along and we took pictures as we went about our day, on the streets, in the shops, at the restaurant.  The shop owners were very good natured and allowed us to have fun with the various accessories in their store. I will not bother to post all of our "fun pictures" but thought you would enjoy seeing the"hat pictures" that we captured while
wandering through "Charming Charlies.  Now, if you've never been in a "Charming Charlies," you need to go if you have one nearby.  I don't think I've ever seen anything to compare and it really was a bit overwhelming to me.  But, if there is an accessory that you need, in any color that you need, they WILL have it.

My cousin, Lisa

"Yours Truly"

It was a great 4 days and I have no doubt that my Mom was peering down from heaven enjoying our visit as well.  I could not believe how smoothly and timely my flights were each way.  I arrived 20 minutes early both going and coming.  I was astonded that it cost me $55 to get my two suitcases there and $60 to get them back home.  I had no idea that I would have to pay both ways.  Flying has just gotten "out of control" but it is still the quickest and most convinent means of travel most of the time.  So, guess I'll keep putting up with their "stuff." ~smile~

While it was good to go, it was good to get back home.  Hubby was mighty glad to see me!  And, again, it's good to be back in touch with The Company Girls!  For more great Company Girls, check out Rachel Anne's Home Santuary. You'll be glad you did! I was the first entry today. WOW! what an honor to be first on Rachel Anne's list!

  1. Sounds like you had a great time! Ya'll look so cute in the hats! I can remember doing silly things like that with my sisters...such fun! How great that your aunt is still so active! I truly believe you will follow in her footsteps, and it is nice to know she survived four boys, maybe there is hope for me! :)

  2. Your aunt looks amazing!!! I would love to know her secret! I'm sure that staying active has a lot to do with it. Reminds me of my great-aunt who is now...gosh...96? Just recently she's started to lose her sharpness but up til then, wow, she amazed me. And the stories she can tell would make you blush!

Meanwhile, it looks like you and your cousin had fun. I love being able to cut lose and act a little silly from time to time. So glad you had a good trip!

  5. Sounds like a great trip. Hubby's cousin and his wife in DC and we have another couple friends who live out there. That's about the extent of those we know in that area. I really hope to be out and about when I'm older. My paternal grandma is 103 and the past few years she was still moving about. She is in a nursing home, but she's really bored there. =p She still remember every. single. thing. Seriously, I think she knows which grandkids or great-grandkids have visited and how often. Oops, we need to go soon.

Anyhow, that store sounds...charming. =p I don't think we have them here in the West Coast. Wow, I'm surprised at your flight arrival time. It's almost unheard of.

Oh, and your comment about breakfast...I was just thinking about muffins this morning. I haven't made any in a long time.

I hear the baby...gotta go. Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Loved hearing about your visit. Sounds like pure "girl fun" - nothing better. If I looked like you in a hat I would wear one 24/7.

  12. Gram (my DH's grandmother) lived to 98, and was also sharp as a tack. She only lived in a nursing home for the last few months, otherwise she was at her own house - cooking, hosting with friends/family over, etc. We loved spending the night at her place. Apparently she was still chatting away fifteen minutes before she passed away.

Like your aunt, she had great genes! The stories they can tell about years gone by are wonderful to hear.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, and enjoy the rest of your week ...
