Wednesday's Hodgepodge

And, here we are, the last Wednesday of January.  What a month it has been!  I'm so thankful for Hodgepodge as it serves as a nice diversion to all the "hulabaloo."  It's a nice diversion for me to participate in answering Joyce's questions and it's a nice diversion for you to read my answers.  Hey, it works!  Hope you enjoy!

1. Have you done more binge watching this past year than in 'normal' years? Any plans to break that habit in 2021? Tell us one or two shows you binged last year that you really liked.
Well, not sure it would be classified as binge watching but Hubby and I started watching a lot of Netflix and Amazon Prime series last year when the pandemic started.  One series that we thoroughly enjoyed was Heartland.  It is somewhere around 13 or 14 seasons and some of the seasons have 18 episodes, so it keep us busy for about 3 months.  We enjoy a good series but so many of them are just not fit to watch, so we love it when we find one that is fit.  And, we enjoy good movies as well.  Suffice it to say, there's just not much on TV anymore.

2. January 26th is Australia Day. Have you ever visited or lived in Australia? Have you ever tasted Vegemite, and if so what did you think?  Is a trip down under on your bucket list? We answered a question about travel three months ago (the October 21st Hodgepodge), but let's revisit now...where are you when it comes to planning or even imagining travel this year?

I have never been to Australia and have no plans to go.  It is NOT on my bucket list.  We are planning to go to Oklahoma and see our Granboys and their parents for Easter this year and then we have a family trip planned for Branson the end of May.  There will be others as the year unfolds.

3. Something that zaps your energy? Something that energizes you?

I think I am still a pretty energetic person but, the intense Louisiana humid heat can zap the most energetic person for sure.  I enjoy a moderate amount of outside work but especially in the early spring when I'm readying our porches and patio for the season.

It doesn't take a lot to energize me, most days I get up raring to go.  I guess I would say that mornings energize me.  Does that make sense?

4. On a scale of 1-10 what are your eating habits like these days? (1=all junk food all the time and 10= juicing every green thing in the frig) Healthiest meal you've eaten in the last week or so?

My eating habits have been pretty much the same all my life.  I don't deprive myself of anything but I use extreme moderation.  I'm probably a 7 or 8 on a scale of 10. Most days, if I'm at home, I eat several slices of turkey pepperoni, a small slice of cheddar cheese and veggie stick chips for lunch.  I don't know if it's all that healthy, but it's sure low calorie.

5. What's your most often 'Back in my day....' thing to say?

"Back in my day, we didn't have a TV in our house until I was 9 years old."  When my kids first heard me say that, they were speechless, and they are still.  They have never known life without a TV.  As I told them, I never missed it because I didn't know what it would be like to have one.  But, I well remember the day we got our first TV, and it was gigantic!  I was beside myself with excitement and then I knew what I had been missing.  And, truly in 1961 there were lots and lots of great TV shows and we watched them as a family. And someone in the family had to get up and change the channel and adjust the rabbit ears, depending on which of the 3 channels the TV was on. Yes, that was "back in the day" for sure.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Okay, I have something funny or scary to share with you.  You can decide which after you read this.  Each morning I go straight to the coffee pot and grab my first cup of coffee and then head into our home office for my morning devotional and prayer time.  It's not really as cozy of a place that I would like but it works and it's private.  So, this past Tuesday morning I was having my prayer time and I decided to ask the Lord to help my Dad's Alexa to stay connected to the wi-fi at his facility. NOTE: my Daddy loves Alexa, she is his best friend.  She plays him whatever music he wants to hear, she tells him the time, she gives him a weather report and answers questions he comes up with.  With his limited vision she is a great companion for him but for the past couple of months she hasn't been behaving. Now, back to my prayer time................I pray in a quiet voice, just above a whisper and when I said Alexa in my prayer, the Alexa on my desk came on and said, "did I hear you whispering to me? Would you like for me to use a whisper voice with you."  Folks, I almost had a stroke and needless to say, it was a huge interruption to my prayer time.  And, as I said, I couldn't decide whether  to laugh or take her and throw her out the window.  I'm afraid if we really knew all our devices heard and knew it really would scare us.

  2. Oh my, I am laughing out loud about Alexa! So funny. I never thought about how useful an Echo could be for an elderly person, and I'm glad your father enjoys it. Thanks for the tip on Heartland. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, but we only had a 13" tv with 3 channels. Even when I got a job as a teacher, I didn't get cable until around 2000! My how life has changed! Have a wonderful Wednesday.

  4. Oh I don't know what I would have done if I would have heard that response from Alexa! I agree, not sure if it's funny or scary!

I've heard lots of people that have enjoyed Heartland, I haven't watched it yet. I too miss the shows that were wholesome and could watch together. Both our boys have loved Andy Griffith.

  5. That is funny! Our Alexa blurted out "you are running low on cat food, do you want me to order you some more?" out of nowhere. I guess it's because my hubby special orders our cat food from Amazon and it had been 2 weeks since the last purchase. Startled us for sure.

  6. Now ALEXA has me laughing out loud! I would have peed my pants probably. LOL! So glad she is comfort for your dad though. I've actually never seen a full episode of Hearthland but I have heard great things about it. Maybe I need to check that out. Happy Wednesday Lea. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  9. When our Echo starts "acting up", we unplug it for a few seconds and then plug it back in. It reboots it and it works like a charm! Hopefully, that could help with your dad's Echo.

  10. We have an Alexa and lately I'm feeling like I might want to get rid of it. It's wonderful for some things, but is feeling like it's a little too much in our life here. Kinda creepy. We may go visit the newlyweds this Easter. I am eager to see their home and town. Many states away...

  11. Awhile back, I learned that you could ask Alexa to use her whisper mode. I am usually up before Joe, so I do use the whisper mode when he is still sleeping. I'm sure that was unsettling or you, though!! It is good that your dad likes and uses his Echo! Our sometimes responds to our TV since the one in our bedroom is just inside the bedroom door, within shot of the TV. That is always funny! Great story!!

  12. Lea, I don't laugh a whole lot these days, but your Alexa story got a chuckle out of me. That's wild! Thanks for the story!

  13. I find it both laughable and scary. A while back, I walked into the bathroom where our Echo was after picking up a prescription, and Alexa informed me without being asked to, that I had just purchased a particular med and did I want to start ordering them from Amazon for X amount. I truly wanted to yank her and her sister in the kitchen out of the wall and toss them. I didn't and do use them for music and weather updates. But your story about takes the cake.

  14. That is hilarious about Alexa! So funny. I think that is so sweet that your daddy is able to have some communication this way!

  15. Well, I sort of laughed when I read about Alexa, BUT! It sort of scares me too. I have heard several weird things like this and it sure makes you wonder who is listening!!! I'm afraid our private lives are not so private anymore. I too remember when we got our first TV. Not sure of my age though. It's amazing how far the TV has come, and although the technology part is much improved the quality of shows has gone south!!! There are things shown that I never would have believed would have been put on public display. I have to agree with you about the heat zapping energy...both here and in LA. We went to New Orleans about 3 years ago in JULY...big mistake. One day we were wandering around and I got so hot I literally had an emotional breakdown...so unlike me. It was an interesting place but if I ever go again it won't be in the middle of the summer!!! I always enjoy reading your answers and getting to know more about you:) Have a lovely week...and let's enjoy the cold/cool weather while we can!

  16. Oh my gosh, that Alexa story was hilarious!
I think I forgot that you're in Louisiana...one of my sons went to LSU Law School, came back to TN for a few months, and then high-tailed it back!!! I think he is a true Louisianan at this point. He had to evacuate twice this year, so I bet you can guess in which part of the state he lives!

  17. Wow, that is a little scary about Alexa!! We just bought our first Alexa-product, an Echo Dot. I am wondering if my mom would like one, and reading that your dad loves his, I am tempted to get one for her. But we have no way of setting it up until her apartment complex opens up again and allows visitors into residents' apartments. Oh, Covid.

  19. For how long does your child play with that controller vehicle? One month at the maximum? what's more, after that? That turns into a simple piece of plastic toy, right? At the point when you are financial planning an enormous sum, then ensure that your kid plays with their #1 toys of frozen for a significant stretch of time.
