A September Kinda Hodgepodge

And, believe it or not, this is the 432nd edition of Hodgepodge!  That comes to 2160 questions that our dear Joyce has thought up for us.  Hats off to Joyce for sticking with it all these years.  We love and appreciate you.

1. As we begin this brand new month tell us, on a scale of 1-10, where does your life fall in terms of being in 'apple pie order'? Please elaborate. (1=nowhere near it, 10=practically perfect in every way)

I would say that I'm an 8.  I thrive on a life of order and can get my "panties in a wad" when things get out of order. But, life happens and things can definitely get out of order and that's why I did not say a 10.  I feel I am a far more productive person when my life is in order and I'm definitely a "happier camper" when it is in order.

2. An apple a day keeps the doctor away...are you doing your part? Red or green? Sweet or tart? Ever played the game Apples to Apples? Do you like apple pie? If so, ala mode or just gimme the pie?

No, can't say that I'm doing my part because I'm not a big fan of apples.  But, if I were, I would prefer Red Delicious.  I do like apple pie and use to love my Mom's fresh baked apple pie.  I'll take mine plain.  Apple pie will always evoke a special memory of my Mom for me.  Just about 5 hours before she suffered a massive stroke she had baked a delicious apple pie, called me to come and join her and Daddy for a piece with some coffee.  Little did I realize that would be, for all practical purposes, the last time I would see my Mom.  The dreaded phone call came just 5 hours later and my life would never be quite the same.

3. Tell us about a time recently where you 'upset the apple cart' or the last time someone 'upset your apple cart'?

I'm not sure this qualifies as the "upset the apple cart" that Joyce is referring to but it certainly upset my apple cart.  About 2 weeks ago I was mixing up one of the nutrition shakes that I so dearly love.  I generally just run to the shop and get one but I always have 2-3 dry ones here in case I either can't or don't want to go get one.  I have this Cuisinart hand blender that I decided to use rather than getting our my big Ninja blender.  Well, I put the wrong attachment on it and when I pushed the button to start mixing, it sent strawberry liquid all over my kitchen.  Good grief, I couldn't get the thing turned off quickly enough.  I'm sure I didn't run it 15 seconds but the mess it made looked like I had run it for 15 minutes.  But, thankfully I was able to get it all cleaned up, put the correct attachment on my blender and eventually got to enjoy the shake.

4. What are three words that come to mind when you think of September?

Fall is coming!!!

5. What are you most looking forward to this month?

Hubby and I will be going to the Atlanta area to visit his two sisters and their husbands.  We always have such an enjoyable time and it doesn't happen near often enough but we definitely enjoy the time we do have together.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Many of you may have seen this picture on Facebook last Friday.  The assisted living facility, where my Daddy lives, had a dance for their residents last Friday afternoon.  I went over a little before it was to start and ask Daddy if he would like to go down to the common area for the dance.  He said he didn't think he wanted to go. His eyesight is such a detriment to activities such as this.  But, I told him I was going to run down and watch for a few minutes and I'd let him know how it went.  Well, he decided he would go with me.  As soon as the first song was played he had grabbed  a partner and I thought my heart would burst.  He had such a good time and sang along with every song played.  He and Ms Jimmie (pictured above) are big buddies. She is 95 and still so spry and Daddy, 91, really enjoys visiting with her.  My Daddy's world is so small due to his very limited eyesight that when he can enjoy a activity such as this it really makes me happy.  It seemed all was right with the world for those few minutes.

And, I leave you with this.................

  1. Oh my goodness, what a mess. Yes, that definitely qualifies as an upset-apple-cart. So glad you will be making another fun trip to Atlanta. You do always seem to enjoy them so much, and I know Tommy does too. We need all the family time we can get these days.

  3. Lea,

I've had things go awry in the kitchen, a split second can feel like an eternity and oh, my the mess! My late mother-in-law made the best apple pies. She kept them made and in the freezer for quick desserts for company. Now, I'm here to tell you that one was a 10. I've never known a woman who's so organized and on top of things. She put me shame. I remember when we bought our first home. My in-laws were in their late 50s and early 60s. They out performed us with their go-go way of doing things helping us to settle into our new place. We tried our best to keep up but we were pretty certain they ran rings around us then and now that we're that age, I don't think we can do what they did. lol Oh, I loved reading your random thoughts! I'm so glad your dad had a delightful time at the dance. I'm happy he decided to join you, it sounds like that's all he needed was your lead. Have a wild and wonderful Wednesday, my dear!

  5. Loving that sweet picture of your daddy dancing. Made my old heart leap with joy. Apples, well, like you I'd prefer red delicious for sure and about the only way I eat an apple is with peanut butter. I do enjoy that at times. My apple pie order life would be around an 8-9 I would say. I too, like you, like order! But I have surely learned along the way what to loosen up the reigns on with order in my life and it's hard. But, when too much order gets in the way of fun, family, and togetherness then it's time to change routes a little. Oh I am hoping that September will bring a fresh of breath cooler air our way dear Lea. Enjoy your Atlanta trip with the girls. That will be so much fun. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  8. Your words: It seemed all was right with the world for those few minutes.

I wish I could say I feel that way. What a sweet story about your dad.

And your mom with the apple pie. I felt some of your pain as you shared your loss of her just a few hours later.

  11. What a great post. I enjoyed reading all your comments, especially the one about your daddy...just too sweet:) I hope I am still dancing in my 90s...with my hubby guiding me. I'm not a big fan of apples either but I do love apple pie (with or without ice cream:) I think all that's going on in the world right now has upset my apple cart. I've been just so down about it all. I am behind in reading and commenting on blogs, writing in my journal, etc. I need to perk up!!!! Hope you will come back to visit me...I'm going to try to keep up better with my posting. Enjoy your time in my wonderful state...although I'm not a fan of Atlanta. Oh the traffic!!!!
