Are We Too Connected???????

First, let me say, Company Girls, you are the BEST!! If you are not a part of Company Girls, then go to Rachel Anne's blog, at www.HomeSantuary.blogspot.com, and check us out. We're a fun group of gals for sure! Now, on to today's entry............

I bet if you are reading this blog, you enjoy your computer! Aren't they just amazing machines? I mean whatever did we do without the internet? We can find out anything we want or need to know about any subject. We can stay connected with friends far and near. But, I've been wondering, is there such a thing as being "too connected." Technology today is magical and fantastic. There's email, texting and phoning, all usually in the palm of our hand. I read an article on this matter the other day and the author stated that, "technology blocks our ability to live the good life by gulping up available time that could, and often should, be spent on other more productive activities..and by putting up a barrier that gets in the way of relationships and experiences that could otherwise be more enriching." Ugh! that caused me to stop and think.
My Blackberry

She went on to say that most of us would be embarrassed to admit how many hours we spend on our Blackberrys, I-Phones, and computers. Now, let me be the first o admit, I LOVE, do you hear me, I LOVE my Blackberry and my desktop and laptop computers!! To tell you the truth, I can hardly imagine life without them. BUT!!!!!! there definitely was life before them and somehow I managed just fine and folks got in touch with me when they needed too, it just wasn't while I was in Wal-Mart, driving down the road, etc. And, guess what, we all survived during those days.

My Laptop

I was in a hospital waiting room this morning and someone's cell phone rang. They answered it and held a full fledged conversation loud enough for the entire room to hear, and it obviously wasn't concerning a crisis situation. Of course, that is not the first time that has happened to me. It happens more regularly than I care to recall. Why do folks think that the entire world is interested in their conversation and further more, how can they be so rude? I attended a funeral this afternoon and in the program they asked that everyone please silence their cell phones. That should not have to be mentioned should it? I mean shouldn't we realize that a funeral, a church service and such is no place for a cell phone?

My Desktop Computer

In my wondering, I couldn't help but think about the Lord and how much better off we would all be if we were as "connected" to HIM as we are our phones and computers. WOW!! can you even imagine? And, again, don't get me wrong, I do not think that HE minds our having these items, but I do believe it is HIS desire that we keep them in balance. I'm reminded of the scripture about "in all things moderation."

I have definitely been asking myself if "my technological gadgets are in charge of me, or I am in charge of them." I'm afraid that I would have to admit that more times than I care to admit, they have been "in charge of me."

I would not want to go back to the days before all these wonderful inventions. There are so many "pluses" to them, but I do believe that if we allow them to constantly interrupt our lives, problems are likely to arise.

May we strive to find HIS perfect balance in all areas of our lives.

  1. Very good points! Last year, I fasted from blogging during the 40 days before Easter. It was AMAZING the time I found that I didn't realize I had squandered on the computer! In fact, when it was over, I went through and deleted many blogs that I just read to read and now only have a few each day that I MUST read!

It is a little convicting how easty it is to connect with people through a computer and yet so difficult, at times, to connect with our Heavenly Father!

  2. Balance is so hard to achieve sometimes! I am feeling really convicted about finding balance, myself. I've recently become a housewife and a freelancer, so while I'm trying to find freelance work there is a lot of 'down time' that I have to fill. And more often than not, I fill it at the computer rather than around the house, doing more productive or enjoyable things. It's so hard to rein it in sometimes!!

  3. Yikes! This sure hits home! I find it so easy to lose track of time when I am working on photographs or blogging. But I also find that true of anything I enjoy doing including spending time with family or scrapbooking. The time flies. Anyway, I sure want to be sensetive to the needs of those around me. Thanks for the post!

  4. Oh so true! I am definitely guilty of letting my technology eat my time away sometimes. Not my phone though...it's really old one that everyone makes fun of :) So glad you posted this. Great reminder to get the balance and keep it!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  5. I know exactly what you mean. when I go out with some people they always seem to be talking to someone else on their cell phone, or texting, or playing around with the apps. And with cell phones, people seems to be less committed to things. If something comes up, you can always call to cancel. I like having face-to-face conversations, and people just seem more "real" when you are talking to them in person rather than chatting online. They do have their good points.

  6. this hits me hard because we're about to have to send off our ONLY laptop to get fixed and I have no idea how long it will be. Do you know this practically sends me into a panic attack? "what if I need to know the answer to something?" "how am I going to keep in touch with everyone?" etc etc. It's truly sad how attached I am to this machine and I am hoping this time away will be good for me.

  7. Great, challenging thoughts! I was in church last week when someone's cell phone rang right in the middle of my husband's sermon. AND HE ANSWERED IT! I don't know the magnitude of his situation, but I found it very distracting, to say the least.

I was listening to Beth Moore on Life Outreach International this week and she also said something about being too connected. She suggested that when we twitter "just finished grocery shopping," we are a bit too connected. :) Now, I don't twitter, and I don't have a blackberry, but I probably do spend quite a bit of extra time on my laptop. Something that I am becoming more aware of and trying to remedy. In place of that, I am spending more time in His Word, "reconnecting" with Him. :)

    Thanks for sharing!

    Have a great weekend!
