Monday's Musings

Well, beyond the shadow of a doubt, it was a real good thing that I cancelled my trip to Des Moines and Chicago this past weekend.  While our weather here in NE Louisiana was nothing compared to there, it was bitter, bitter to us.  Saturday morning was in the high 50's and by 5:00 PM, it was at 38 degrees and continued to drop to the high 20's.  And, we had wind at about 25+mph.  Hubby and I went out for a while and were more than happy to get back home to a warm fire and a fuzzy throw.

About a month ago I got the latest IPhone, the XS Max.  It really hurt my feelings to pay such a price for a cell phone but I wanted the camera and just decided to spring for it.  The camera in the XS Max is, except for a few features, like having a DSLR camera at your fingertips.  Well, I knew that I needed to learn everything I could about the camera and how to use the various "bells and whistles."  So, I enrolled in the IPhone Photography Academy.  I have already learned so much and I am only about 1/3 of the way through.  It is for anyone who has an IPhone 7 or above.   You take the class at your own pace and it will be available forever.  So, if you are interested in learning all the "ins and outs" of your Iphone camera, you might want to check this out.  There is a fee for the classes.

Ever since the first of the year I have been seeing posts about the Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.  I had read so much about it that I decided to check it out while I was on the elliptical one morning.  There are several episodes and I chose the one that focused more on the entire house.  I watched about 15 minutes of it and decided that I pretty much had this "tidy business" under control.   The family that she was helping in the particular episode  had stuff and clutter all over their entire house.  It made me crazy and that's when I decided that I did not need to watch it.  I do have, by some standards, a lot of stuff but it is all tidy and organized.  And, as she states in her series, it is a constant effort, something that you make a point to work at each and every day.  And, in the process you give things away, take them to a thrift store or throw them away.  Otherwise, it's easy for us to become a "slave to our stuff." If you are needing some motivation in this area then I highly recommend this series. Her main thread throughout the series is "does this bring you joy?"  If it doesn't bring you joy then you need to get rid of it.  But, I imagine that we all view things that bring us joy differently. And, so it goes...........

This Wednesday I will begin this Bible Study by Lysa Terkeurst with a wonderful group of ladies.  We are such a diverse group and that only adds to the interest of the study.  We have ladies my age and older and then a large percentage are young Moms barely keeping their heads above water.  I have always enjoyed interacting with younger women and encouraging them along their way.  I look back with so much fondness on the ladies that took me under their wings when I was right where some of these young ladies are at this time.  I'm looking forward to this study that will likely speak volumes to all of us in attendance.

Each page has nice margins for note taking and there are images and scriptures to color in throughout, if you so desire.  I read about this on another blog and wanted to share it with you.  If you are into creativity and expressions then this just might be the One Year Bible for you.

And, I leave you with these...........

No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

Frame every so-called disaster with these words, 'In five years, will this matter?'

The shortest distance between two people is a smile.

  1. I have heard great things about the Lysa T. book and study. She's been on several podcasts lately with interviews, and wow she has really been through the wringer the past few years. I might get a new phone this spring. I try to go 3 years between new phones, and then pass down my old one to one of the kids. That new camera sounds incredible! Hope you have a wonderful week.

  2. Love that Bible, I am going to check it out. I have a lot of stuff but try really hard to have a place for everything. That phone sounds wonderful, I love using the camera on my phone even though it isn't the latest and greatest. Enjoy your day dear friend, HUGS!

  6. That is some pretty cold weather you are having. Sorry about missing your trip but you couldn't have wanted to be in that weather either. Thank you for the Netflix tip. I am a slave to my things and it has overwhelmed me for years. Now if you come in my house it doesn't look that way but every cabinet, closet, drawer, etc needs to be cleared out. Have a great week Lea.

  8. I heard the new iPhone is great for photography. Who knew that I could take a course in iPhone technology!! The Mister will be happy because I always bug him to help me. Now all I have to do is bug him into buying me the fancy new phone. Have a great week, Lea.

  9. I love my Galaxy S8 because of the fabulous camera. Yours must be truly amazing. The art museum, from which I retired in 2017, offered cell-phone camera classes. They are quite popular. Have a good week ahead!

  10. I'm doing that Bible Study online and so far I'm loving it. I have a new fondness for Lisa TerKeurst, especially after hearing her story on a variety of podcasts lately. And you are so correct about the weather this past weekend! I was out and about in it and could not believe how fast the temps dropped!

  11. I seriously was having so much anxiety watching Marie Kondo's show too! It was fascinating and inspired me to keep sharing practical and purposeful tips to simplify life. The weather has been so winter-like lately. Bummed it ruined your plans!!!

  12. Looks like a great style for a bible so I want to look at that closer. Thanks for the recommendation and love those sayings too!

  13. Great post, Lea. I have scanned through a book by Marie Kondo in the past and came to the same conclusions as you. But you and I have ‘been around the block, so to speak, and we both also have a tendency to pick up after ourselves anyway, so the advice Marie had didn’t tell me much I didn’t already know and practice. And yes, (smile) deciding to keep only those things that give you joy can mean a wide range of things to various people and they still wouldn’t get rid of a thing.

This book by Lisa was given to me as a Christmas gift. I haven’t got to it yet and probably won’t till after the move, but it’s on my “going to read” list.

The quote about nobody being in charge of our happiness but ourselves — soo true!

And I am glad your trip to Chicago got cancelled. The weather has been very hard of late! We even got the cold temps and wind down here!

  14. Sorry your trip had to be canceled, but sounds like it was for the best. I saw that Lisa T bible study book in Hobby Lobby today. I've read one or two of her books. Hope you enjoy the study! XO

  15. Yes, I’m happy you are safe and sound I did not go on that trip. I know you were disappointed but it’s better to be safe. I know so many people that are doing that Bible study, it sounds so amazing! I hope you have the sweetest day!

  16. I have really decluttered a lot in the last few years. I learned my lesson when we down-sized my mother-in-law. She had (literally) never thrown very much away. It was truly unbelievable all the "stuff" we unearthed. I decided then and there that I would not leave that chore for our son to deal with!!! I still have plenty of things for him to have to go through some day, but not nearly as much as we once had:) I have added this Bible to my Wishlist on Amazon. I was wanting to do some Bible journaling but both my Bibles (which are relatively new) just don't have enough room. Sorry you missed your trip, but better safe than sorry!
