Miscellany Monday

{one}
We have awakened to a dusting of snow and ice this morning. Not anything serious, but enough that all the schools and several businesses are closed.  We waited around for it most of yesterday and it didn't really do much.  Our area sees this type of weather so infrequently that everyone gets all in a "  tizzy"   when we do.  Everyone heads to the grocery store emptying the shelves and acting like we're going to be housebound for days on end.  The truth of the matter is that it will likely be gone by noon today and we'll be back into our normal routine.  But, my daughter and DIL were sure excited to have this surprise day off to spend with their babies.

I tried my hand at making Gumbo this week-end.  That is a Louisiana food that I have never had the courage to try and make.  I just wasn't sure about making a roux.  Well, there are packages of roux that are made for those of us that are afraid of trying to make it.  I had heard that they were good, so I dove off to give it a try.  Most folks here think that the more that goes into Gumbo the better it is.  So, I put shrimp, tasso pork, sausage, chicken and okra.  And, even I do say so, it was scrumptious!  I was quite proud of myself and am well on my way of becoming a good ole Cajun cook. ~smile~

While Hubby and I were waiting on the "  wintry mix"  to arrive yesterday afternoon, he started channel surfing.  We were bored and needed something to liven things up a bit.  He ran across Sarah Palin's Alaska and we began watching it.  Regardless of your political view of her, I think if you ever watched this show, you would say that she is one more amazing woman.  She was man handling a chain saw, Carabou hunting, repelling, gold mining, fishing and all the while, looking like a million dollars.  Oh, the magic of television! ~smile~

I had my entire post done and out of the clear it just suddenly disappeared.  Urggggggggggg! so, so aggravating.  So, let me just say that I do always love linking up with our sweet Carissa at Lowercase Letters  and  if you would enjoy more random thoughts this Monday, then just go check her out.

A beautiful week is wished to each of you!  Can you believe we're already 10 whole days into the new year. WOW!

  1. Lea, my husband and I have enjoyed watching that Sarah Palin show on Alaska. Now he wants to move to Alaska. I'd rather visit as I think it's way too cold there for full time. LOL. And yes, she is an amazing woman.

Good for you on tackling the gumbo. It looks delish. Enjoy the snow while it lasts.

Thank you for your kind comments on Heart Choices.

    Blessings and love,
    Debbie

    Happy Monday!

  2. We finally got the snow here, too (looks like about 2 inches)! And the kids are ecstatic. Of course, even though schools are out, we homeschool so there will still be school taking place...after we celebrate with monkey bread and playing in the snow. I am personally hoping to get just a bit more today (which is predicted) so we can have TOMORROW out from the tutorial!

Your gumbo looks yummy! I tried to make it once with a microwave recipe for the roux that Mrs. Celie gave me. I unwisely used my micro cooker from Pampered Chef and melted it. Oops! I think Chris prefers me to stay away from Cajun Cookin' and leave it to those who know what they are doing!

Chris and I love Sarah Palin's show. He wants to go to Alaska now, me...not so much, looks to cold for my liking!

Have a great week. By the way, I took my first step toward my "makeover" this weekend and colored my hair for the first time ever. Close to same color, just covered the grey! Thought of you and your precious gift of the book. Hopefully gonna get down there in the next few weeks...I'll call if we do!

  3. The snow sure is pretty. I love to look at it, but wouldn't want to live in it. Too cold. It's 30 degrees here and I think I will die! Your Gumbo sure looks good. Have a wonderful day!

  4. Oh we had snow...and yes, always funny here to see people do the same thing and it is rare to even loose a work day...still fun.

I have never made gumbo, but would love to try...I love it when I get to have it.

We watched Sarah Palin's Alaska last night also...I totally agree with you. I looked at my husband and said..."I would love to try some of that...it looks like so much fun." I was amazed by what all she tried...politics aside, I too think she is pretty amazing.
Of course the part I laughed the hardest was the shots with her daughter Willow...oh, my!! too much like mine own daughter and the look Sarah gave her...well I can say I have that look down also. I so felt her mommy heart.

I have watched her from the day she announced her pregnancy with the fifth child...she was in her forties and I had just had one in my forties.

Have a great week...we are starting to melt here.

  6. Yummy, that gumbo looks delicious! It's snowing here, and some gumbo would be awesome. Got chicken stroganoff in the crockpot instead.

That snow looks awesome, too ... as I said, it's snowing here with 3-5" forecast. If we get it, it's going to be one of the snowiest winters in a long time. I love snow, so I'm not complaining.

  8. That gumbo does look so good - go you!

The weather is icey here... No snow, but a freezing ground. Schools were closed today and on a 2 hr delay tomorrow. Chas tends to over react!

Channel surfing - nice! My hubby would be in heaven!!!

  9. That first picture is beautiful! We're out tomorrow for the 4th day in a row...we didn't have school on Friday because of expected snow that didn't materialize, then we got his Sun. night. I'll be surprised if we go back before Friday.
We are enjoying watching Sarah Palin's Alaska...she seems like such a down to earth woman.

  10. Craig makes a very good gumbo and if you ever want to make the roux from scratch, he could give you some great ideas!
